Feedback on my blog

This is feedback that I received from Johnny on my blog, including research and planning posts. As Johnny had already reviewd my music video and ancillary products, he is clearly aware of the theme running throughout my products and therefore can give me constructive criticism and advice on how to improve my coursework as a whole. Additionally, he is able to tell whether I have planned my products well and the reasons for any changes that I decided to make along the way.

Feedback on my completed first draft

This is feedback from one of my classmates. Here, Johnny is reviewing my completed first draft of my music video by pointing out things that I have done well and letting me know on areas where I can improve to ensure that my video is of the best quality.
I will take Johnny's advice to improve my video, especially any feedback on the camera work due to his experience in photography and working with SLR cameras. Not only is his feedback from the point of view of someone who would potentially watch this video as an audience member, but also from someone who is media literate and aware of the codes and conventions of a slow piano pop song.

First draft of my music video - A Thousand Years

Sequence 03 from Neha Raithatha on Vimeo.

This is my completed first draft of my music video. I have decided that this will just be the first draft rather than my final draft as I have already received feedback on how to improve it, which I have written about in previous blog posts, therefore I would like to make these changes in order to make the video look more aesthetically pleasing as well as more professional.
The majority of the video shows Monique sitting alone in a dark room, singing the song about her lover who she is waiting for, looking lonely and isolated.
Towards the end of the song, where the artist is more positive that she will be reunited with her lover, Monique stands and sings proudly, almost making it seem as if she is performing on a stage.
The Hyde Park footage has been used as flashbacks as the singer reminisces about her love and shows her finding an old letter that we assume is from her lover. The fact that the letter is tea-stained makes it look old and depicts how long the artist has been waiting for her lover to return.
Additionally, there is one shot during the final chorus where the breaking of the fourth wall is clearly illustrated. This makes the protagonist seem brave enough to deter from the conventions of a ballad and suggests that her bravery and courage comes from the knowledge that her lover will return to her and that she will not be isolated for much longer.

Production Post - Alterations made along the way

  • Initial Idea - Montage of Monique and her lover as a couple. Monique walking through Hyde Park miming the lyrics to 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perri. She finds clues around the Rose Garden which trigger flashbacks of her past relationship with her lover. Towards the end of the song, she walks out of the confined archway into an opening to a fountain, where her lover is waiting for her. She is finally reunited with him, after waiting for "a thousand years".
  • I considered changing the video slightly by making it so that her lover is in the army, hence why she feels like she has not seen him for so long, but is willing to wait for him for a thousand years.

  • When we got to Hyde Park, Monique was uncomfortable with miming in public so I decided that the miming would be filmed in a studio-like room, such as the black recital room at my school.
  • We also didn't get to film everything in Hyde Park and needed to return to film the flashbacks but this was difficult to arrange due to Winter Wonderland being set up.
  • I originally wanted the studio footage of Monique miming to show her sitting on the floor in a black room with spotlight lighting, illuminated by tea-light candles and rose petals surrounding her. However, seeing as this was a fire hazard, and the bad weather would make it difficult to film outside, I decided to opt for a Adele style, 'Rolling in the deep' shoot with Monique sitting on a chair in the middle of a dark room, illuminated by spotlights as she mimes the lyrics.
  • It turned out that the footage from the studio shoot was of a higher quality than that from the Hyde Park shoot, and seeing as Winter Wonderland is open until January 5th but my deadline was before Christmas, I decided to have the majority of the video of Monique singing in the studio, with the Hyde Park footage of her finding the letter scattered throughout.

Production Log - Completing the first draft of my coursework

Today I completed the first draft of my entire coursework and tomorrow I will hand it in to be analysed and marked over the Christmas holidays by my teacher. This will give me a great deal of qualitative feedback which I can use in the new year to help understand how I can improve my work.

The best piece of feedback that I have already recieved would be to re-shoot some of the footage for  my music video (especially that from the studio) and usea crane rather than just placing the camera on a tripod. The reason for this is because the still shots create a static feel to my video, whereas slow, sweeping movements would add to the whimsical, romantic tone of the song. Additionally, the cuts from one shot to another seem too harsh for the soft sound of the song.
For now, I have tried to soften the look of the video by using crossfade transisions on each clip using Adobe Premiere CS6. These transitions allow clips to fade into one another, which helps the movement look smother rather than harsh cuts that do not reflect the mood of the song well.

When re-recording my studio footage, I would like to get a wider variety of shot such as footage of Monique naturally relaxing or dancing around rather than all of it of her sitting in one position on a char, singing the lyrics as it may get slightly repetitive.

My peer advised me on how to integrate the Hyde Park footage as I told him that I didn't feel like I had a large amount of decent footage, therefore for now I have split up the part where Monique finds the letter and spread it throughout the video in quite a chronological order, so instead of the Hyde Park footage being the linear narrative, it in fact a flashback itself and it is as if Monique is telling the story through the miming of the lyrics in the studio footage.

Drafts of my Ancillary Products

This presentation goes through the creation of my products as well as the changes that I made along the way due to audience feedback that I had received.
This will help me to track the creation of the products as well as making it easier for me when it comes to writing my evaluations as I will understand how my products have developed and how I acted upon the feedback that I received when creating them.

Feedback on my first draft

This is audience feedback that I received whilst creating the first draft of my music video from Rag'e Ali who could give me audience feedback from a male's perspective as well as constructive criticism from the point of view of a media literate student who is aware of the codes and conventions of a pop music video.

Production Log - Completing the first draft of my music video

This entry explains the final touches I made in order to complete the first draft of my music video. I also talk about the feedback that if received and how I will act upon this, as well as the next steps that need to be taken in order to improve this further.

Production Log - Reflecting on the first Hyde Park shoot

Yesterday I went to the Rose Garden in Hyde Park to start filming my music video.

We arrived at the park and luckily the sun was shining, therefore I decided that my main aim for the day would be to get lots of different shots with Monique (the actress) walking through the archway in the Rose Garden and coming across a letter that has been left by her lover.
Luckily, I go some good footage to edit and work with. I wanted to get as much footage as possible first as it would make it easier when editing my video together because I would have a choice of many different shots.
When we were leaving the park, I noticed the bandstand was just outside of the Rose Garden but unfortunately due to the weather conditions, I was unable to film anything using the bandstand. I am hoping to go back and film a scene with the couple dancing inside the bandstand which will be one of the flashbacks. The bandstand itself would also be used as one of the props as seeing it again is how the flashback will be triggered.

Production Log - Makeup-tutorial for the Hyde Park shoot

As my first video shoot is fast approaching, I have been researching makeup tutorials to show to Monique in order to ensure that we can achieve the perfect ethereal look. The makeup is extremely important as it adds to the entire image of the artist. For example, dark eyeshadow with bright red lipstick would be inappropriate for the Hyde Park shoot as Monique is meant to look pretty and whimsical, and almost fairy-like, therefore it is essential that her makeup reflects this.

Production Log - Completing my magazine advert

In today's lesson I carried on with the creation of the magazine poster for the album that my music video belongs to. Last leasson I created a template that is seen in the first image then today I added in an image that I found online that is similar the to the photograph that I would like to take. I created two differemnt versions as seen below then got feedback from my classmates and teacher who liked the layout of the first one but the opacity of the second one. I therefore decided to add an image of blossoms in the background with just under 50% opacity. This is continuous of the whimsical theme and adds to the effectiveness of the poster.

Raw footage of location

Here is a video of my raw location footage that I made using Adobe Premire.
The video contains photographs and video recordings of the location and is paired with an instrumental soundtrack of Christina Perri's 'A Thousand Years' which is also the song that I will be using for my music video.

Pairing the music with images of the location allows me to get a feel of what the video will be like. The location is in the Rose Garden in Hyde Park and has a very ethereal feel, which immitates the tone of the song well. This will allow my video to have a sense of continuity in the tone and theme.

Filming/Editing Schedule

Scene One: Hyde Park
Filming – 10th October 2013, 12-4pm
Editing – 11th - 25th November. Editing will continue after this until the first draft of the entire video is complete.
Details: On this day, I would like to have shot the majority of the footage from the Hyde Park scene. This includes footage of Monique walking through the archways in the rose garden and part where she finds the letter, as well as a few close up shots of her feet taking steps through the park.

Scene Two: Black Recital Room
Filming – 12th December 2013, 3.15-5.15pm
Editing - 13th - 18th December. Editing will continue after this until the first draft of the entire video is complete.
Details: This will be the studio shoot that will be shot in the black Recital room at my school. There will only be one prop- a black chair or stool. There will be two spotlights and Monique will be sitting in the middle of the darkened room, singing the lyrics of the song. I will try to get footage from several different angles in order to make the footage look diverse when put together in the music video.

Scene Three: Hyde Park
Filming – After 5th January 2013
Editing - 8th - 15th January. Editing will continue after this until the second and final drafts of the entire video is complete.

Details: Once I create my first draft and receive feedback, it may turn out that I need to include more of the Hyde Park footage, such as the Bandstand scene. Therefore, I will have to return to Hyde Park after Winter Wonderland has finished in order to film this.

Production Log - Visiting the location

I have just returned from visiting my location so decided to vlog about it. I went to visit the Rose Garden in Hyde park and took some footage/photographs of the location which I will make into a short video on Premiere.

Production Log - Refining research and storyboarding my ideas

This week I have been trying to refine the research tasks that I completed over the summer holidays and upload them to my blog, adding commentary under every post. I have used my free time to do this as I felt it would be a better use of class time to complete one of the planning tasks instead.

This week I started working on my storyboard which I will use to help me when filming my video. Having done the script and shot list before hand, it has been much easier to create the storyboard as I am literally just bringing my ideas to life through drawings.
As my art skills are not the best, I will ask one of the art students to re-draw the shots for me once I have completed my first draft. I will then go on location with the actors and take photographs to also make into a storyboard.
Creating several drafts of the storyboard will help me to understand the best way to film the video as well as making it easier as I will be able to use the storyboard as instructions for filming to ensure that I get the right shots needed to make my music video look as realistic and professional as possible.

Production Log - location ideas

Through my research, one thing that I have found to be very important in setting the tone and helping to specify the genre of a music video is the setting. As the song my video is set to is in the Pop genre and has a very ethereal feel, I thought that it would be appropriate to set my video outside. I would like to use a setting with several trees and bushes where I would be able to hang fairy lights. I would also use the branches to hang some of the clues that the protagonist would find, leading her to her lover.

I believe that the simple, yet embellished setting would allow the audience to understand the story without it being distracting and would militate the intimate, ethereal theme of the song too to ensure that there is continuity editing throughout the music video.

Audience Research

This is research that I have conducted about my target audience. It describes the social status, psycho-graphics, age, gender and tendencies/identity/ This will help me when creating my products as I have to constantly remember who will be either watching the video, being influenced by the advert or buying the digipak. The target audience needs to be consulted and referred to/remembered throughout this project as to make my coursework as realistic as possible, I need to act as if I am creating these products for a client who want to promote themselves to this particular audience and influence them to buy albums, tour tickets etc.

Production Log - Reflecting on the completion of all research tasks

It is nearing the end of the Summer Holidays and I have finally finished all of my research posts, which I am quite relieved about.
In the video I talk about the progress that I have made so far as well as my next steps that need to be taken in order to start filming and creating the products such as the video itself and the Poster/Digipak.

Production Log - Reflecting on Research tasks completed during the summer

Throughout the Summer Holidays I have been gradually completing the research tasks in order to ensure that I leave as much time as possible to record and edit my music video.
The research tasks have taught me about the music industry and how music videos are made, as well as how they first came about and their true purpose.
All of this information gives me background knowledge on music videos which will help me when creating my own as I will know which conventions to stick to and also the ones that I should challenge in order to make my video unique and entertaining as well as fit for purpose.

Similar Products

This video shows research that I carried out on similar products. This includes music videos that have something in common with my own idea such as the theme, narrative or genre. I have decided to analyse 2 different music videos. The first is a narrative video where a girl walks through the woods and comes across many superstitions and fairy-tale motifs throughout the narrative, which is similar to my protagonist finding the clues through the Rose Garden which trigger her flashbacks of her lover. Additionally , the second is a slow pop music video which is the same type of music as my video. I chose to analyse this to see the type of videos that are made for piano rock/ slow pop songs.

Analysis of previous student work

This is an analysis of a previous student music video that was made a few years ago. By analysing this video I ws able to understand the type of video that I would be able to make and how other students have created theirs. I analysed the camera, editing and mise-en scene of this viedo and believe that it is very realistic and looks professional. What I like in particular is the adaptation of a classic piece of literature (Alice in Wonderland) that has been in corporated as well as the effort that has gone into the props/mise-en/scene. Additionally, the shots have been well thought out in order to reflect the protagonist's confusion and fascination to the audience.

Analysis of an Existing Digipak

In this presentation i have analysed Ellie Goulding's digipak for her album 'Lights'. I have spoken about how it conforms or breaks the typical conventions of a Pp genre digipak and the elements that I would use in my own digipak. This digipak seems to conform to the majority of the conventions and I like the continuity of the theme of the album throughout the digipak as well as the booklet of lyrics inside which seems like an 'added bonus' for buyers.

Music Channels

MTV

MTV is a 24-hour general entertainment channel which launched on August 1st 1980 and originally started showing music videos to songs of all genres which was guided by video hosts called VJ's, however it recently started creating its own TV shows and broadening its range of shows from MTV news, to reality and scripted shows such as Catfish, Teen Mom and Jersey/Geordie Shore, all of which are aimed at adolescents and young adults.

http://www.youtube.com/user/MTV
MTV has its own YouTube channel on which it uploads not only music videos but also backstage information and news on the artists.

4 Music
4 Music is a music and entertainment channel in the UK and available on some digital television providers in the republic of island. It is the only channel within the Box Television Network to be branded under Channel 4 and is one of the main music channels in the UK.
The channel replaced The Hits and shows music videos of all genres, usually focusing on videos for sngs that are in the current charts.
The Box
The Box is a music television channel in the UK and Ireland. It is one of many music channels in the UK broadcasting mainly music videos but also showing other industry-related shows such as music news etc.

Viva
VIVA was first aired in December 1993 as a German music television show. Years later, several music labels gathered together and invested in Viva, bringing it to the UK  after becoming frustrated with MTV's power over the music video world.
VIVA has become increasingly popular from its immediate success and exposes all types of artists, giving a promotional base for their music.
In January 2005, MTV finally acquired VIVA after it had tried all efforts to improve its ratings. MTV now opp orates VIVA all across Europe

Magazine Advert Analysis

This is a video analysing Ellie Goulding's magazine advert/poster for her album 'Halcyon'. I have analysed both posters and identified when each would be used.

Analysing this poster has helped me to identify the key conventions and how these can be either conformed to deterred from them. This will help me when constructing my own magazine advert as I will be able to understand the layout and the information that needs to be included as well as how the styling of the poster can create different effects in order to appeal to different audiences.

Visual Progression and Image Systems

Visual progression is an important thought to consider when creating a music video as it helps the video to grow rather than staying static. This ensures that the video is visually interesting and will keep the audience entertained.

My music video will show visual progression through the use of the setting. At the beginning of the music video, the protagonist will be walking through a narrow maze and the camera will start with several close ups of her feet taking steps and her face as she sings the song. As the song progresses, the shot of her walking through the maze will progress into a mid-shot and then into a long-shot. The camera will predominantly stay in the same position in order to convey a sense of continuity.
This visual progression will evoke the audience to understand the journey that the protagonist goes on from an isolated to communal environment.

The girl will find small clues throughout the maze which will evoke flashbacks of her past with her lover. The clues will act as motifs so that the audience understands that any time there is a clue, it will be followed by a memory. The memories will be shown with a dream-like effect to show that they are thoughts of the past rather than present-day events. The effect will consist of a white glow around the frame with the background in shallow focus and only the characters will be clearly visible in deep focus.

Evidence of videos you admire

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f4wj_RcqYk

This video contains parts of different music videos that I admire. All of the videos are for various reasons including the metaphorical message, the association with another piece of media text (e.g. fairytale), or even the type of cinematography.
I hope to use the different aspects of these videos that I admire and include them in my own video where relevant in order to make it as realistic and entertaining as possible.

Song Lyrics

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri
Heartbeats fastColors and promisesHow to be braveHow can I love when I'm afraid to fallBut watching you stand aloneAll of my doubt suddenly goes away somehowOne step closer

Chorus:
I have died everyday waiting for youDarling don't be afraid I have loved youFor a thousand yearsI'll love you for a thousand more
Time stands stillBeauty in all she isI will be braveI will not let anything take awayWhat's standing in front of meEvery breathEvery hour has come to thisOne step closer
Chorus:I have died everyday waiting for youDarling don't be afraid I have loved youFor a thousand yearsI'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find youTime has brought your heart to meI have loved you for a thousand yearsI'll love you for a thousand more
One step closerOne step closer
Chorus:
I have died everyday waiting for youDarling don't be afraid I have loved youFor a thousand yearsI'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find youTime has brought your heart to meI have loved you for a thousand yearsI'll love you for a thousand more

Contact with the band/artist

I have explained the reason why I would be using the song and have assured them that no copyright infringement is intended.

Idea 1 Script - A Thousand Years

Friday 12 July 2013

Production Log - Reviewing my initial idea

In today's lesson I tried to complete my second script for the song 'Disguise' by Tyrants, however I found it difficult to construct a script as coming up with an idea for the narrative was quite difficult. Therefore, I have decided to go with my first idea and use Christina Perri's song "A Thousand Years". I came to this conclusion after reflecting on how natural it felt when coming up with the idea for that script which depicted that I had a clear thought of how I wanted that video to look, therefore I hope it will turn out as realistic as possible.

I will now carry on creating the shot list for my first idea and once that is finished I will create the storyboard. For my storyboard, I will sketch out my ideas then commission one of the Art students to draw it out again for me in order to ensure that the storyboard is easy to follow when filming the video.
Once the pictures have been drawn, I will take my actors on location and take photographs of each stage too and add them onto the storyboard before annotating it and writing the description.

To create the storyboard I will use a program called  Celtx which I also used to create the script. This will ensure that the storyboard looks as professional and realistic as possible, which in turn will help me and give me more focus when shooting the video itself.

I am aiming to have both of these documents completed before we leave for the summer holidays, therefore during the summer I will be able to get footage of the location and inform the actors as well as hopefully record the video for the first time. This will allow me enough time to edit the video and give me the flexibility to re-shoot any scenes if need be. Recording over the summer will also ensure that I have enough time with the actors to shoot for as long as it takes.

This is a cover video that has been made by Emmanuelle Vera, a young Filipino-American singer and songwriter. She has recorded the video using resources easily available to her, which is what I will also have to do when creating my coursework. In addition, she has used the song "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri which is also the song for one of my ideas, therefore watching the video may give me inspiration on how my video should look.

Production Log - Reviewing my script

Since starting my A2 media coursework at the beginning of June I have decided to create a music video for my coursework and have conducted research into music videos. I have also spent lots of my free time watching several music videos of different genres in order to get ideas for my own.

After thinking about all of the resources I have, I created a blog post. This helped me when creating my initial ideas and I now have two ideas. After discussing this with my media teacher, I have decided that I will create a script, shot list and storyboard for both ideas then decide which one I would feel most comfortable in going forward with.

In the last week I started creating the first script on Celtx which is based on my idea of using the song 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perri that was written for Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II.

My idea consists of a girl walking through a forest and finding items on the trees and the ground which remind her of her lover. The music video would show progression as with each step and each item, she is getting closer to her lover who she eventually finds, waiting in an opening in the forest.

Next lesson I will use Celtx again to make the script for my second idea which is to use a song called 'Disguise' by my friend's band 'Tyrants'. I will create the video to portray the lyrics in a metaphorical way with a guy walking around a town and a girl chasing him, however his face is not seen until the end of the video. My ideas for this script are not completely set in stone and I am assuming that the idea will develop as I write the script, just as it did with my first idea.

Recent trends in music videos

This week we started creating the scripts for our music videos.
This task made me think about the structure of my video and after watching several other music videos that have been recent successes, I have come to realize that many of these use prologues with voice-overs to almost set the scene for the music video and give an insight into the lyrics before the music even begins. I liked this idea of audiences being able to understand and relate to my music video so have decided to imitate this prologue/voice-over idea with my own video.

Here are some examples:

One of my ideas is to use my friend's band and have a narrative music video with some clips from a live performance.
There are 3 songs to choose from and these are the lyrics for the songs. Once I decide on a song, I will analyse the lyrics which will help me to decide what the video should look like in order to connotate the message behind the lyrics.

The Right To Criticise:

I remember when
We'd hang around with people we didn't like
I remember when
Their opinions were the only ones that were right
I remember when
You sat me down and you looked me in the eyes
I remember when

You sat me down
You sat me down
And said

However
Whatever
Come over
Deliver

I wish I was a little less kind
I had the right to criticise

Do you remember when
You had your victims all dressed up in a line?
And told them over and over again
That they'd lost their mind
That they'd lost their mind
That they'd lost their mind
But you ain't no brother of mine

However
Whatever
Come over
Deliver

I wish I was a little less kind
I had the right to criticise

Even with a cross strung round your neck
Sitting proudly on your chest
You let the devil in
And let yourself become a wreck

However
Whatever
Come over
Deliver

I wish I was a little less kind
I had the right to criticise
Stood In My Corner:

stood in my corner
he's stood there again
stood chasing shadows of passing men
he walks into the pub
with his fist in the sky
starts a fight
with the bar tender
who is far from surrendering
he knows why he's here

God knows how it happened
it started with drugs
but now he's alone
to roam the high road

Just ten years ago
he'd sit with his wife
unaware from now and then that he'd leave paradise
now and then he'd remember
that old sweet sane fella
that everyone'd known

God knows how it happened
it started with drugs
but now he's alone
to roam the high road

There he goes
King of the high road

Stood in my corner
he's stood there again
stood throwing bitterness
in the faces of men
it's always the same
things ain't gonna change

God knows how it happened
it started with drugs
but now he's alone
to roam the high road

Disguise:

VERSE
My hands they're tied
And secrecy's why
You thrive to hide
Behind a disguise
It's false its fake
It's eating me inside
It's eating me inside
It's eating me alive
You see me
I try to fight
But I'm tired

CHORUS
Let me go
Let me know
(help me escape)
Let me go
Let me know
(before it's too late)

VERSE
I'm getting stronger
I ain't gonna listen
Cause now i know
Yeah I know
That i'm my own
I'm my own

CHORUS
Let me go
Let me know
(help me escape)
Let me go
Let me know
(before it's too late)

OUTRO
Just like a puppet you pull my strings
Expecting me to do everything you think
